The Uncle Steves is an Illinois-based one-man-band from Illinois. That one man is multi-instrumentalist Chris Picciuolo. Illinois is a state. For two days I have listened to Dead From Dan’s Mountain, mostly in the background but also up close, becoming one with the speakers.Ill-noise sounds about right, but in a good way. In a A Day in the Life (the crazy part) meets The Muppets kind of way. If The Muppets was Sonic Youth. In a Haloperidol meets Robitussin kind of way. It’s rock-pop-psychedelic-melodic primal scream therapy and the calm of afterwards. In short, music for a good End-of-the-World party.
The Uncle Steves, from Illinois, seem to have taken Beck’s “Mellow Gold” era and taken it to a whole other level, turning it into their own unique genre. They excel at mixing hip hop with gritty rock, harmonies, acoustic ecstasy and some excellent handclapping. The Uncle Steves style is infectious and powerful, and stays with you for days… There are moments of melodic bliss amongst moments of raw shoe gaze, and it all ties together brilliantly; with heaps to discover upon repeated listenings.

I’ve been reading up on the Kennedys and their genealogy, and especially took an interest in Rosemary. Such a beautiful young woman. She was starting to show bouts of rage and depression in her late teens/early 20’s. Her father tried to fix this by having her get a labotomy. Turns out that most likely broke her brain down for good. This letter is heartbreaking having known most of the story behind their relationship and her problems.
